Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Since its independence in 1978, the Commonwealth of Dominica has developed close foreign relations with nations throughout the region and rest of the world. Through the Dominica Ministry of Foreign Affairs the government seeks to strengthen unity, technical cooperation and long term interest between Dominica and other countries. The local government is devoted to establishing and maintaining good relationships with countries internationally by ensuring that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs functions effectively. The local government ministry responsible for foreign relations is the Ministry of Finance, Social Security and Foreign Affairs, headed by the Prime Minister of Dominica.

The Dominica Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for formulating and implementing foreign policies for the Commonwealth of Dominica. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for all diplomatic and consular relations with foreign governments. Through the execution of effective foreign policies, the Dominica Ministry of Foreign Affairs is dedicated to enhancing the overall social and economic development of Dominica.

The Dominica Ministry of Foreign Affairs has an organizational structure that is hierarchical and includes a political affairs division. The minister at the head of the organizational structure is the Prime Minister who is responsible for implementing policies, while the ministry is managed by the permanent secretary, who is the chief administrative and accounting officer. The minister and permanent secretary of the Dominica Ministry of Foreign Affairs are accompanied with technical and support staff from various government departments. The Dominica Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the direction of the minister is responsible for diplomatic representation, policy formation, regional and international organizations, deportation, external affairs, extradition, protocol and repatriation of citizens.The Dominica Foreign Affairs Ministry is an important government department and as such the staff must be capable of carrying out orders from the minister. The ministry prides itself on having a highly trained, experienced and motivated staff. The permanent secretary in the Dominica Ministry of Foreign Affairs has the job of further protecting and establishing bilateral and multilateral interests of Dominica overseas. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs conducts diplomatic and consular relations with foreign governments internationally and represents Dominica at international fora.

The government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to foster close and friendly relations with all commonwealth countries, United States, Cuba, Europe, the People’s Republic of China, and Japan among others.
